    How to Get a California Nursing License

    Getting your CA nursing license can be a stressful and oftentimes tedious process. Below are some tips to help you throughout the process.

    • All applicants must complete an educational program meeting all California requirements, in addition to passing the NCLEX-RN examination.
    • RNs applying for their California nursing license must create an account on BreEZE, the state’s licensing and enforcement system. Click here for instructions on how to set up your account.
    • To qualify for California nursing license by endorsement, individuals must hold a current and active RN license in another state. Endorsement fee, $100.
    • Processing time for license by examination and endorsement is around 10-12 weeks.

    California RN License Verification

    If you hold a CA nursing license, you can view your license status via the BreEZe License Verification page. The Board suggests that you provide your original RN license card in addition to photo identification.

    If you are an out-of-state RN applying for a California nursing license by endorsement, you can go to Nursys.com. Here you can navigate to the Nursys Licensure Verification tab, which is an online service where you can request a secure electronic verification of licensure.  

    California RN License Renewal

    To avoid delayed processing of your California RN license renewal, it’s important that you provide all required information. Below is some helpful information.

    • The California Board of Nursing requires RNs to renew their license every two years, with the exception of their first California RN license, which will expire the last day of the month following their birth date.
    • RNs who wish to renew their California nursing license must complete 30 hours of continuing education (CE).
    • The fee for timely California RN license renewal is $160 and delinquent is $235.
