The role of the operating room (OR) nurse or perioperative nurse is to provide care for patients before, during and after surgery or surgical procedures. The operating room nurse job description also includes the role of patient educator, circulating nurse and/or scrub nurse, and potentially RN first assistant or operating room director with additional training. Circulating OR nurses work within the operating suite but outside of the sterile field; scrub OR nurses handle and prepare operating instruments and equipment within the sterile field. Operating room nurses or perioperative nurses work in every type of healthcare facility, including hospitals, ambulatory or outpatient surgery centers and physician offices.

OR nurse jobs require the successful completion of certificate programs that initially qualify RNs for perioperative nursing positions. These generally take a year to complete. Preparation in critical care units and emergency rooms are encouraged in order to gain program acceptance. After two years (2,400 hours) of perioperative experience, clinicians are eligible to take the voluntary certificate exam in order to qualify for full-fledged OR nurse employment opportunities.

Operating room nurse salary rates vary based on experience, location and training, and currently average approximately $84,200 per year, according to the 2012 Nurse Salary Survey from ADVANCE for Nurses. Higher operating room nurse salaries are frequently available to clinicians with advanced skills and/or specializations.

To accompany their roster of OR nurse jobs, NursesRx also provides highly competitive salaries, as well as full benefits, flexible schedules, free housing and travel expense reimbursement. Our travel nurses also receive free liability insurance and full assistance with licensure, as well as comprehensive health / vision / dental coverage and the opportunity to retain your insurance coverage for up to 30 days while you’re between travel assignments.
