    How to Get a Washington State Nursing License

    Are you planning on applying for a Washington State nursing license? Here are some things you need to know before starting the Washington State nursing license application process.

    • All individuals must have graduated from a traditional or nontraditional registered nursing program approved by the Board.
    • As of January 1, 2018, all nurses must complete workforce data by completing two surveys.
    • You must complete 7 hours of AIDS education and training.
    • If you have an out-of-state address, you will be required to submit fingerprints for an FBI background check. However, you can obtain a temporary license while the fingerprints are being processed.
    • The Washington nursing license application fee is $120.00.

    Washington State Nursing License by Exam:

    • If you graduated from a nursing program not in Washington State, you must submit the out-of-state Nursing Program Certification of completion form to your director and request they complete the form and return it to the Nursing Commission before you will be eligible to take the NCLEX.
    • You must pass the NCLEX exam before your nursing license will be issued.
    • Once you pass the NCLEX, you will receive a onetime paper license in the mail 7-10 working days after your license was issued.

    Washington Nursing License Application by Endorsement:

    • You must verify you currently have an active license by examination.
    • You must verify your nursing education.
    • You must complete an English proficiency exam if your nursing education was completed outside the United States.
    • You must have an active RN license.
    • If you completed your nursing education outside the United States, you must pass the NCLEX.

    Washington State Nursing License Renewal

    Your Washington State RN license must be renewed annually. Here is some other information you should know before you renew your Washington state nursing license.

    • As of January 1, 2018, all nurses must complete workforce data by finished two surveys. One of the surveys must only be completed once, but the other survey must be updated every year.
    • Continuing competency requirements must be completed every three years with 531 hours of active practice and 45 hours of continuing education.
    • The RN renewal fee is $120.00.
    • You may renew your Washington nursing license by mail, in person, or online.
